Powder Tower is the oldest tower in the city wall and is the defensive tower of the medieval harbor, now known as Almedalen. The harbor has disappeared from the scene because Gotland has risen due to land uplift. From the top of the tower could crossbowmen shoot straight into the incoming boats. The tower had no door, just a small door about ten feet up on the wall, where you came via a ladder which is then drawn up, which made it difficult for attackers to break into.

The name Powder Tower was the tower, however, considerably later. It was during the battles with the Danes act gunpowder stores on both sides, because it was not unusual for the city was conquered.
